Students and Finncon 2012

The restaurant Juvenes gives student discount for the lunch on Friday and Saturday to all people who have a valid Finnish student card. The people with foreign student card can get the student discount if they are doing their basic studies at a Finnish university (including Universities of Applied Sciences) or are doing exchange period in Finland and are registered as students at a Finnish university. Unfortunately the Social Insurance Institute of Finland does not give support to foreign students who are not studying in Finland.

The students of the University of Tampere can acquire credits by attending Finncon. More information about this can be found from the Students page.

Finncon Needs Gophers!

Finncon 2012 is in need of Gophers. Most of the work requires Finnish language but not all. The gophers will get a t-shirt, lunch, entry to the staff room and of course a unique experience of Finncon!

As the sign-up form is only in Finnish (with quite a lot of required info), for those not familiar with the Finnish language it’s easier to email us if you wish to become a gopher. Please tell us your age, what kind of work would you be willing to do during the convention and an email address you read frequently.

The people responsible for gophers are Maria Mänki (marilyn) and Marko Leppänen (Lepi). You can contact them via email at tyovoima@2012.finncon.org.

Masquerade is coming!

The traditional Finncon Masquerade will be organized on Saturday July 21st. The actual Masquerade competition will take place at the university in the afternoon and the winners will be announced in the evening party at Telakka. Please notice you have to be 18 to enter the bar Telakka. For more information and to enter the Masquerade, please contact Miikka Uotila naamiaiset@2012.finncon.org.

Hotel Info

The official convention hotel is Scandic Tampere City (Rautatienkatu 16), which is within a walking distance from the convention site.

The rooms cost:
130 €/standard single room /day
150 €/standard double room /day
The price includes breakfast.
Use the code FIN200712 when making the reservation. The dead-line for reservations using this code is June 20th 2012. The reservations can be made by phone (see the number on the hotel’s website) or by email tamperecity@scandichotels.com. Please remember to mention the reservation code FIN200712 in the email or on the phone!

The website of the hotel: http://www.scandichotels.fi/

Please note that there is a huge housing fair going on in Tampere during the convention (during the entire July, in fact). This, unfortunately, means that hotel rooms go quickly and getting cheap accommodation – or accommodation at all! – may be tricky. We recommed using the official convention hotel: they have a set quota for us, and getting a room there will be a lot easier than from any place else.
